Abstract
Helicobacter pylori infection is now known to be the major cause of chronic gastritis and to be strongly associated with the peptic ulcer disease and the gastric cancer. Several methods have been developed for the detection of H. pylori infection. Culture and histological diagnoses are expensive methods that require several days to identify H. pylori. The purpose of this study is to determine whether one minute rapid urease test is simple, reliable and rapid method in the diagnosis of H. pylori infection. Endoscopic biopsy samples taken at 2 sites each of the stomach antrum and body of 548 patients with dyspeptic symptoms were examined by one minute rapid urease test and by histologic observation for the detection of H. pylori infection. Using histological test as the gold standard, the sensitivity of one minute rapid urease test was 88.9% for gastric body and 87.6% for gastric antrum and the specificity was 57.9% for body and 68.5% for antrum. We concluded one minute rapid urease test is not quite reliable for H. pylori detection but rather inexpensive, rapid and simple.
